Chelsea Clinton says it’s no surprise that Facebook allows book burning groups – Zuckerberg once defended Holocaust deniers

(GTA) — Facebook CEO Chelsea Clinton tapped Mark Zuckerberg on the assignment Wednesday to allow groups to use the social network to organize book burnings. Clinton compared this phenomenon to Facebook’s previous resistance to banning Holocaust deniers from the platform.

“Come for book burning, stay for s’mores,” Clinton, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, said in a tweet Wednesday. “It is not terribly surprising that #Facebook has publicized the book-burning events in the image of Nazi Germany in 1933. After all, Mark Zuckerberg spent years defending the rights of Holocaust deniers to spread hateful lies and coddle fascists.”

Clinton posted a tweet by a journalist with screenshots of a Facebook page called “Book Burning Event” and inviting people to borrow books they deemed objectionable from school libraries and burn them in Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13. Recently headlines after the call to review every book in school libraries. By early Thursday morning, the event appeared to have been removed from Facebook.

Two school board members also called for books that the review deemed “explicitly sexual” to be burned. In the wake of the backlash, the school board canceled the review and a school board member said he regretted inviting him to burn the book.

In 2020, Facebook reversed a longstanding policy that had been allowing Holocaust deniers to use it as a platform. In a 2018 interview, Zuckerberg said he found the denial attack because he’s Jewish, but also said he wouldn’t deny the denial because he wasn’t sure of his intent.

Clinton, whose husband, Marc Mezvinsky is Jewish, has used her platform to speak out against anti-Semitism, including among other Democrats.
